New composite deck with railing and stairs on a Southern Maryland home

Deck Builders in Southern Maryland

A well-built deck turns your backyard into your favorite room of the house. We design and build decks made for Maryland weather and real life.

What to know

Southern Maryland's seasons were made for outdoor living — and a deck is where it happens. Venncorp Development designs and builds custom decks across Charles County, St. Mary's County, and surrounding communities, from straightforward replacements to multi-level entertaining spaces. We build with pressure-treated lumber and low-maintenance composite, and we build them to last.

When homeowners call us

  • Your home has no deck and you want usable outdoor living space
  • Your existing deck is aging, splintering, or structurally tired
  • You want to replace a small builder-grade deck with something bigger
  • You're planning outdoor entertaining space for family and friends
  • You want low-maintenance composite instead of staining wood every year

Signs to look for

  • Soft, spongy, or rotting boards when you walk the deck
  • Loose railings or wobbling posts
  • Rusted or pulling fasteners and visible nail pops
  • Ledger board gaps or flashing failure where the deck meets the house
  • Faded, splintering boards that staining no longer fixes

Materials & methods

Composite decking

The low-maintenance choice — no staining or sealing, consistent color, and strong resistance to Maryland's humidity and temperature swings. Higher upfront cost, minimal upkeep.

Pressure-treated wood

The classic, budget-friendly option. Properly built and maintained, a pressure-treated deck delivers decades of service with periodic staining or sealing.

Railings & stairs

From simple wood railings to aluminum baluster systems, plus code-appropriate stairs, gates, and lighting options that make the deck safe and finished.

04

Final walkthrough

We walk the finished deck with you, confirm every detail, and leave the yard clean.

What affects the cost

Every roof is different, so we quote each job individually after a free inspection. The main factors:

  • Deck size and number of levels
  • Material choice — pressure-treated vs. composite
  • Railing style and linear footage
  • Stairs, landings, and site accessibility
  • Demolition and disposal of an existing deck
  • Footing depth and soil conditions

Warranty & peace of mind

Our deck construction is covered by our written workmanship warranty, and composite decking products carry their own manufacturer warranties, which we explain before you choose materials.

Venncorp Development is licensed and insured in Maryland (MHIC # 05 - 163446), and every job is completed by our own in-house crew — never subcontracted out.

Common questions

Composite or wood — which is better for Maryland?

Both work well when built properly. Composite costs more upfront but needs almost no maintenance and handles humidity without warping or splintering. Pressure-treated wood costs less and looks classic, but needs staining or sealing every few years. We quote both so you can decide with real numbers.

Do I need a permit to build a deck in Maryland?

Most new decks and full replacements require a building permit in Charles and St. Mary's counties. We handle the permitting process as part of the project.

Can you replace just the deck boards and keep the frame?

Sometimes — if the framing is structurally sound, properly flashed, and worth keeping. We inspect the structure honestly and tell you whether a resurface makes sense or whether you're better off rebuilding.

How long does it take to build a deck?

Most single-level decks take one to two weeks of construction once permits and materials are in place. Larger or multi-level designs take longer. We give you a realistic timeline with your estimate.
